Epimedium is an erectile aid and aphrodisiac used in traditional Chinese medicine, which also increases testosterone in the animals studied (but has not been observed in humans). At the same time, it may also be a cognitive enhancer and a heart health agent.
The name of the herb was obtained from goats and sheep because it was found that the sheep were more active after eating the plants near the field.
Icariin is known as an isopentenyl flavonoid and has been shown to exert an aphrodisiac effect. It has also been shown in a rat study that testosterone levels increase at relatively high doses and, at moderate doses, are shown to be beneficial for bone health.
Icariin does not show increased testosterone in females, whereas two other compounds in Epimedium actually increase estrogen in postmenopausal females. This herb has an aphrodisiac effect in both sexes, and an increase in gender-specific hormones is beneficial for both sexes.
Icariin also has a pro-oxidant and pro-inflammatory marker that inhibits stress, acts as a neuroprotective agent, and reduces the recognition of D-galactose injection at a dose of 60 mg/kg body weight (injection). Know the recession. In vitro studies have shown that it also protects neurons from damage caused by lipopolysaccharide (pro-inflammatory agents) and theoretically in rat models of accelerated aging. High-dose oral icariin (75-150 mg/kg body weight) is associated with improved cognitive biomarkers such as superoxide dismutase DI.
In vitro studies have shown that icariin is more effective than genistein in preventing osteoporosis because it is more osteogenic (bone formation). A similar effect was observed in rats. One study showed that the loss of bone mineral density in postmenopausal women was significantly reduced after soy isoflavones (3 mg genistein, 15 mg daidzein) combined with 60 mg per day of icariin for 2 years.
Oral icariin supplementation at 1-5 mg/kg body weight in ovariectomized rats showed a significant difference in erectile efficacy, but testosterone changes were minimal. Specifically, 1 mg/kg body weight can restore testosterone to baseline after penile injury.
Icariin at 10 mg/kg body weight in mice exerts erectile properties and appears to have higher efficacy after repeated doses. In an animal model of erectile dysfunction associated with blood flow, it was shown to have a therapeutic effect of more than 30 days at a dose of 5-10 mg/kg, which matched the 55-110 mg dose of a 150 pound male.
Secondary to PDE5 inhibition, icariin appears to be an effective erectile enhancer. It is clearly better than Viagra. Lower doses (1-5 mg/kg) improved neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression and inducible (iNOS) expression. At doses of 1 mg, 5 mg, and 10 mg/kg body weight, the effects on iNOS and nNOS did not appear to be very different, suggesting that low doses can also benefit in different ways.
Icariin is also associated with increased growth of neurites in the main pelvic ganglia, and the beneficial effects on neurons may extend to the pelvis.
